Under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Debt Waiver Scheme, the Mahavikas Aghadi government has pledged to provide financial incentives of Rs 50,000 each to farmers who regularly repay their loans, announced Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who holds planning and finance departments in the state assembly during question time.

Pawar intervened in response to a question posed by Shiv Sena lawmaker Prakash Abitkar.

Pawar admitted there had been a delay in providing such assistance due to the financial situation affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus-induced lockdown resulted in a reduction in state revenue by Rs 1.5 lakh crore. However, the farmers, who regularly repay their loans, will receive assistance once the financial situation returns to normal, ” he said.

He also said it was the only state to provide crop loans up to Rs 3 lakh at zero percent interest to farmers who repay their loans on time.

After Maha Vikas Aghadi took office, the government announced the loan exemption program which offered total loan exemption to farmers indebted up to Rs 2 lakh and providing assistance of Rs 50,000 to farmers who repay regularly their debt.

Pawar said that under the loan waiver program, the government disbursed Rs 20,290 crore to 31.81 lakh farmers.
